New Direction
Modern Art
Black Lips have a new Mark Ronson produced album, Arabia Mountain, coming out June 7 on Vice Records (pre-order). I was a bit skeptical about the collaboration with Ronson at first since they pretty much come from complete opposite spectrums of the music world seeing that he has worked with artists like Duran Duran, Macy Gray, Robbie
Williams, Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, and Christina Aguilera, but some of the songs from the new record that I've heard so far have grown on me and the sharpness of the recordings have their appeal. 'New Direction' seems a fitting tune to feature today to highlight the shift from a raw, punk sound to the glossier, tighter, well-produced, pop-punk version that seems to be where the new album lies. 'Modern Art' is the record's first single. There will be plenty of opportunities to catch their high energy live show locally either on June 23 at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa (tickets), June 24 at Music Box in Hollywood (tickets), or June 25 at Glass House in Pomona (tickets).
