[on repeat] FOREVER UNTIL YOU ARE BONES by Unwed Teenage Mothers

(previously on CWR)

This 4-piece out of Oxford, Mississippi have released three EPs up to this point, and Unwed Teenage Mothers latest EP, Forever Until You Are Bones (buy), ramps up their power pop sound to a whole other level.  The four tunes on this release are all great, catchy, dirty garage rock tunes that hit just right. There's furious drumming courtesy of Colin Sneed (from Bass Drum of Death), and infectious melodies behind a clear punk backbone that gets the blood pumping. It's a complete mess of fun all the way around, and the only bad thing I can say about it is that it ends all too quickly with all the songs clocking in at less than 2:30. We can thank Hiss Lab Records for releasing the EP on April 2, and you can thank them in return by picking up your copy of this exemplary step in the band's continued evolution. This is something to be excited about.

CLIMB DOWN by Shape Breaker

Philadelphia band Shape Breaker have me asking the question, 'What happens when you take your take your guitar, drag it through the mud, play it to death, add a driving undercurrent of shoegaze-y reverb, and top it with a layer of hazy vocals?' Simple answer: Shape Breaker's new album Eyes Wide is what you get for your work. And this

SUR LA PLANCHE 2013 by La Femme

La Femme is a chic six-piece out of Paris (mostly) that have been gaining some wide recognition in their homeland and the rest of Europe for their addictive blend of cyber-surf that combines elements of Stereolab and Ladytron with a sprinkle of surf pop just for good measure. The band self-released its debut EP, Le Podium #1: La Femme, in 2010, and followed it up with a few more singles and EPs leading up to its release

[on repeat] SHE WANTS TO by White Reaper

Nick Wilkerson and Anthony Esposito are the garage rockin' duo White Reaper, out of Louisville, KY. Citing the late, beloved Jay Reatard as a heavy influence on their sound. They have recorded and self-released an 8-song album of stripped-down, DIY, upbeat garage rock tunes on Halloween last year and it's called White Aura. Their sound is a lot like that of Bass Drum of Death: straight-up, rowdy, crowd-pleasing garage rock played fast and loud and mean and earnest. It's

HALF RIGHT by Zebra Hunt

This Seattle three-piece has released its debut vinyl Beaches EP from Manic Pop! Records earlier this month (buy). Zebra Hunt's EP contains three tracks of casual, sunny pop gems in the vein of The Clean and The Bats.  'Half Right' is the EP's second track and is the most upbeat of the collection with its jangly blissful guitars, bouncy vocal style, and sunny vibes that would seem out of place for a trio out of Seattle, but they

SALLY SMOKED DOPE by Paint Fumes

Charlotte, NC trio Paint Fumes bang and holler their way through a three-song EP of tracks not included on their debut full length Uck Life from December of last year. The Sally Smoked Dope EP was released earlier this month from Slovenly Recordings, and it is a must-have for any fan of balls-out, howlin' good garage rock. I do hope you are already familiar with Paint Fumes, if you are a garage rock fan. If you

[on repeat] T.H.M. by Deerhunter

I have what is probably not a good habit of eventually dismissing a band's output after 3 or 4 albums due to repetitiveness of sound or lack of diversity so it goes without saying that I wasn't expecting much from Deerhunter's fifth LP Monomania from 4AD on May 7 (buy). I've really loved everything Bradford and Co. have put out, including their last release Halcyon Digest, but it was beginning to seem

NO SOUL by Fantasmas

Fantasmas are a four-piece that call Brooklyn home and they released a noisy, gnarly 7" at the end of January for 'Static' b/w 'No Soul' on Low Life Inc. They released some demos and the track 'Blind Children' last year that provide a taste of the punk rock they have to offer.  On the recent 7" 'No Soul' is the more straightforward rocker driven by some serious guitar shredding. 'Static' is an uproar of some more shrilling guitar and post-punk style bass in between the repetitive shouting of the song title as the chorus. Both songs on the 7" can be streamed above, and grab your own copy here.

[on repeat] ALLIGATOR LUNGS by Dirt Dress

Dirt Dress are another great burgeoning L.A. band that released the LP, Donde La Vide No Vale Nada (aka D.L.V.N.V.N), in late 2012 from Recess Records on vinyl (buy) and Burger Records on cassette (buy) to follow a few released from Papermade Records. The three-piece showcase a number of different influences on the most recent LP ranging from surf jangle and western twang to straight up,

Males are a trio out of Dunedin, New Zealand that record some of the breeziest summery pop you'll hear.  Their most recent single 'So High' was released in November of last year following their debut EP release, MalesMalesMales last July. CREEP THE CREEPS by Kids On A Crime Spree

Oakland retro fuzz rockers, Kids On A Crime Spree, are led by Mario Hernandez and his continuing quest for the perfect pop song. The trio's analog recorded debut LP, We Love You So Bad, from 2011 received repeated listens on my end with its genuine 60s style pop and its nonstop joyous energetic drive. This all leads to a heightened anticipation for the band's
