SUR LA PLANCHE 2013 by La Femme

La Femme is a chic six-piece out of Paris (mostly) that have been gaining some wide recognition in their homeland and the rest of Europe for their addictive blend of cyber-surf that combines elements of Stereolab and Ladytron with a sprinkle of surf pop just for good measure. The band self-released its debut EP, Le Podium #1: La Femme, in 2010, and followed it up with a few more singles and EPs leading up to its release
of a debut LP entitled Psycho Tropical Berlin from Born Bad Records on April 23 (buy). It's easy to start making comparisons to French space-synth stalwarts like Serge Gainsbourg, Stereolab, or even more recent acts like The Limiñanas, and those comparisons would be well deserved, but La Femme are not simply re-hashing any of these bands as much as they are adding their own flavor into an already prepared and tested mix. Much of the LP is pieced together from re-workings of songs off the singles and EPs that highlight a penchant for quirky energy and groovy danceability with a beatnik flavor and surfy guitars. There are plenty of moments on the LP, however, that shift into a more pensive style of electronica that slow down the general vibe and momentum. Nevertheless, it's a great find for fans of this style of pop and the double LP with 350g cover art would be a valued addition to your vinyl collection, but I can't seem to find it available anywhere domestically so as of now you're limited to the price of 18 Euros (plus shipping) at Born Bad Records if you really want it.
