I have what is probably not a good habit of eventually dismissing a band's output after 3 or 4 albums due to repetitiveness of sound or lack of diversity so it goes without saying that I wasn't expecting much from Deerhunter's fifth LP Monomania from 4AD on May 7 (buy). I've really loved everything Bradford and Co. have put out, including their last release Halcyon Digest, but it was beginning to seem
formulaic in its simplistic beauty. Elements of that formula are successfully evident on the magnificent songs 'The Missing' and 'Sleepwalking' from Monomania, but the LP manages to capture more with harsher elements of guitar effects on 'Leather Jacket II' and continuing their known history with experimental textures on many of the other songs on the LP. 'T.H.M.' is an evocatively soft, quiet tune driven by its delicate synthesizer and hand claps that is hard not to love, and 'Back To The Middle' is just a good, straightforward indie rock style tune. There's plenty to love about this LP, and I won't bother getting into Bradford's new image, persona, facade because, well...I just don't get it, but Bradford will be Bradford. Maybe he's just tired of being Bradford, and I can get that. Go buy it.
