INFRARED by The Omecs

Some pretty damn good straightforward garage rock from The Omecs out of Grand Rapids, Michigan that will have you bouncing around and bobbing your head in joy until it falls right off.  This four-piece released their self-titled debut on cassette last month from Brooklyn based King Pizza Records and it's evident where they've picked up on sounds from bands like Thee Oh Sees and made it all their own.

[on repeat] AFRICA AVENUE by The Paperhead

The Paperhead have put together quite the exceptional set of psych/mod 60's tunes for their latest (and third) LP, Africa Avenue, which grows from the more youthful previous releases since the band formed in 2009 and parted ways from Nashville to go to college.  Africa Avenue sees the guys regrouping to expand the band's palette introducing touches of avant, kraut, and spacey folk elements to their already fully solid retro sound. Africa Avenue was released November 11 from Trouble In Mind. They just wrapped a midwest/northeast tour  (including CMJ) and are heading to Europe in February.  Let's hope they can make it out west soon.

CIGARETTE MACHINE by Ex-Cult

Memphis-based bruisers Ex-Cult have a new set of tunes laid out to terrorize your brain in the form of Midnight Passengers EP. The title track has been released as a preview and there's reason to be excited in their continued barrage of re-shaping the genre. There's also reason to be sad since this EP isn't slated to be released until February 9th on Castle Face (vinyl) and Lolipop (cassette).

DECADENCE by Nots

Nots features Natalie Hoffman, former bassist of Ex-Cult, Charlotte Watson of Manatees, and Laurel Ferdon from Moving Finger.  The band has released a couple of 7"s including the track 'Fix' above, and since then have introduced Alexandra Eastburn on synthesizer to help fill out the sound because everyone knows punk sounds better with synth (just see Ausmuteants).  The new four-piece are gearing up for the release of a debut LP of synth-laden, raw, snotty punk titled We Are Nots, which comes out Nov. 11th from Goner Records.  'Decadence' is the lead track previewed to the public prior to the LPs release.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are a 7-piece out Australia that are always trying to entice every one of your senses with their experimental music and loads of instrumentation.  Their new LP, In My Mind Fuzz, is their 2nd LP of the year and it's a monstrosity that doesn't let up.  I posted this track earlier when it was released to the web a couple months ago, but the release of the album on 10/31 (fitting) just demands notice.  It's like one wigged-out, psychedelic, krautrock jam that won't let you stop moving. Pre-orders are up and supposedly each version of the first pressing is limited and completely different.  Enjoy the 3D video for 'Cellophane.'

The new Famous Class 7" has been released and this pairing features Parquet Courts on the A-side and the band's choice of Future Punx on the B-side.  It's always worth buying since they feature great bands, proceeds to go a worthy cause, and the artwork is always exceptional.  Future Punx features members of Parquet Courts, Fergus & Geronimo, and The Keepsies and they definitely steal the show on this release with 'Spike Train' and their 80's, synth heavy sound.  They have one other release for 999 / Livin' In A Movie that was only available digitally in September of 2013 that is also worth checking out.  Let's hope they keep putting stuff out.

YOU MADE ME DO THAT by Cruising

'You Made Me Do That' is the A-side of a sold out cassette single by Cruising from Dublin.  The release came from the UK label Soft Power Records in April.  In looking at the names of the band members you would wonder...WTF?  There is Benzedrine Black, Sex Grimes, Dan Handle, and Dick Vortex.  In reality, it's members of Girls Names, Sea Pinks, and September Girls flying undercover. The tune is an excellent example of some dirty, grimy, subterranean punk that you can't help but love.  Fittingly, the band takes its name from a gay exploitation serial killer film from 1980.  Check out the tune put to a scene from the film that will cause you to never look at Al Pacino in the same way again.

Australia's Twerps have signed to Merge for U.S. distribution, and their new EP Underlay was just released yesterday so you should get it.  Vinyl copies are through Australia's Chapter Music label, but it appears it's a digital only release for the U.S., which sucks given the ridiculous shipping costs these days.  You can expect the band's second full-length in early 2015.
