CAROLINE by Kelley Stoltz

Caroline

Keeping The Flame

San Francisco's vintage pop specialist, Kelley Stoltz, has just released a new 7" titled Two Imaginary Girls (buy) and features two female-named tracks 'Caroline' and 'Marcy' to follow-up his 2010 LP, To Dreamers.  The 7" comes to us from the French label Les Disques Steak Records and the A-side of 'Caroline' is an upbeat tune that motors along with some catchy guitar riffs and oozes pop goodness from all

SIT RIGHT DOWN by The Resonars

Sit Right Down
Long Long Thoughts

The Resonars are out of Arizona and have released four quietly exceptional LP's since 1998.  Upon listening, it's very easy to think that they are straight out of some old dusty record bin, but one surprising catch is that 'they' are not a 'they'...the band is made up of one person, Matt Rendon, who is responsible for playing all the instruments and singing every

GOLDILOCKS ZONE by Grass Widow

Goldilocks Zone
Milo Minute (previously on CWR)

The ladies in San Francisco's Grass Widow are gearing up for the release of their third LP, Internal Logic, which comes from their self assembled HLR Records on May 29 (pre-order).  We've heard 'Milo Minute' and 'Disappearing Industries' off the record already, and now we have another song of layered madness in the form of 'Goldilocks Zone.'  The way these girls interchange vocal harmonies and intersperse off-beat rhythms throughout their songs is pure hypnosis.  They were just in

GOT NO MONEY by FIDLAR

Got No Money

No Waves (previously on CWR)

L.A's FIDLAR have been pretty busy lately touring in support of the xxx from last year's DIYDUI 7" (buy), their recently released No Waves/No Ass 7" (buy), and the Don't Try EP just recently digitally released from Mom + Pop Records (buy).  Get an overdose of slacker lyrics and power punk from two tunes off the EP above.  FIDLAR will be playing again locally at the music, comedy, and literature festival, The

PALE MOON by Wymond Miles

Pale Moon

The Fresh & Onlys' lead guitarist, Wymond Miles, has a forthcoming debut solo LP, Under The Pale Moon, which is out on June 12 from Sacred Bones Records.  It follows up his EP, Earth Has Doorsfrom earlier this year.  Take a listen to the track 'Pale Moon' off the LP and catch him during his brief west coast tour on May 10th at The Echo where he will be opening up for Lotus Plaza (tickets).

TOO BUSY TO LOVE ME by Orca Team

Too Busy To Love Me

Vancouver B.C. (previously on CWR)

Portland's Orca Team quite easily have been one of my favorite bands to listen to over the past year, as evidence from being one of my favorite LPs of 2011.  Their rusty retro-surf grooves never seem to fail putting a smile on my face

[on repeat] PARALLEL by The Hex Dispensers

Parallel

Agatha's Antlers

Austin punkers, The Hex Dispensers have just released a new 7" from Germany's Red Lounge Records (buy).  The title track, 'Parallel,' is classic Hex Dispensers with the throbbing energetic guitar drive, synth undertones, and dark lyrics.  The 7" is being dubbed an 'ear movie' with the title track detailing Alex Cuervo's (band's frontman) near death experience as a child, and in his mind he is dead either here or in a parallel

[on repeat] NIGHTMARE by Grave Babies

Nightmare
Fuck Off

Upon first hearing Seattle's Grave Babies in 2010, there wasn't too much information readily available about them yet.  They've quietly self-released two hard to find LPs  (Deathface and  Bloodskull) on Skrot Up Records, which are both quite amazing...as well as some singles over the past couple of years.  Their current EP, Gothdammit (buy), comes out today from Hardly Art Records.  There's a very reminiscent 80's

CRUTCHES by Vatican Beach

Crutches

I know absolutely nothing about this band to share with you...sorry.  I keep a folder of audio files that I can fall back on when I'm not quite sure what to post, and 'Crutches' by Vatican Beach is in there, but I don't remember if it was emailed to me, if I read about it somewhere else, or if I heard it somewhere (real professional, right?).  However, if you look on the bright side I have this gritty little pounder of a track for you that is off of their Demo 2012 release, which includes four

[guest mix] GET BENT

Get Bent and CHROMEWAVES RADIO got together to swap guest mixes today.  For those that may not know, Get Bent is a kick-ass blog providing news, reviews, and features about underground garage and punk rock written by and for the fans.  The Get Bent crew is made up of a sizeable team of writers from pretty much all over the place.  They all have tastes quite similar to mine and that must be why I get along with them so well.  Stream Get Bent's playlist from the 8tracks player above, or from the CHROMEWAVES RADIO 8tracks page, and download it right here.  Tracklisting and commentary is after the jump...Enjoy this shit!
You can check out my mix for Get Bent over there or on Spotify.

THE GREATEST by Corners

The Greatest
Sometimes

Corners are a four-piece right here out of Los Angeles that are as of yet still unsigned, but it's still early on for them and from listening to their Beyond Way EP it shouldn't last too long.  The songs 'Sometimes' and 'The Greatest' have made their way around the internet for a few months now and have been getting regular rotation in our radio stream during that time, but the whole EP is up at their Bandcamp now, which includes an

PURPLE SLUMBER by Vacations

Purple Slumber

Dystopic Vision by Fungi Girls (previously on CWR)

According to the fine folks over at Get Bent, the frontman for Texas' Fungi Girls, Jacob Bruce, has recorded this breezy demo of jangly rock under the name Vacations.  This tune is all we have for now, but Jacob has said that he's working on an album...no real details as of yet.  If you're familiar with Fungi Girls you can recognize the familiar vocal style, but the thrashing psych/garage element of Fungi Girls has been exchanged for a much dreamier take on things with 'Purple Slumber.'  Who knows where or how this sound will develop, but it's definitely worth staying on top of his Facebook for more details.  Lets take this opportunity to look back and

DEEP AND FROZEN MOTHER NUDE by Expwy

Deep and frozen mother nude
Foppish gallant and scarecrow thin

I spent a bit of time the last couple weeks delving in to the three LP's released by Montreal's Expwy since last June (that's only 10 months folks), and have come out with the knowledge that Matt LeGroulx can consistently write some gritty, dusty, tunes with nods to the classic guitar sounds of the 60's and 70's.  It's stripped down, straightforward, old-fashioned pop/rock with some quirkiness of today's DIY attitude to give it an overall fresh take on the sound.  All three records are available for free at his Bandcamp and

[on repeat] DUSTY RHODES by Lotus Plaza

Dusty Rhodes

Monoliths

Lotus Plaza's new LP Spooky Action At A Distance really surprised me.  The 'other' guitarist (and mult-instrumentalist) from Deerhunter, Lockett Pundt, released his second LP on April 2 from Kranky Records (buy).  I was expecting more of the experimental, swirly, repetitive pedal effects that seemed to take over his debut solo release, The Floodlight Collective, but instead was met with some extremely accessible,

SAY SO by Orca Orca

Say So
Underground
Holding On

Orca Orca is the brainchild of Boston's Jim Hewitt and his jangly dream pop first caught my attention last year  with the self-release of the single for 'Change of Pace.'  His new EP, Make Live (buy), was just released on March 21 and contains six more of the gentle, lo-fi type of pop that simply makes you want to just float away.  The entire EP is available for a buck (yes, a singular dollar) over at his Bandcamp where you can

GREATEST PRETENDER by Sugar Stems

Greatest Pretender

I Don't Want To Be Around You

Some super catchy, sweet ass pop from Milwaukee's Sugar Stems that I came across while doing my regular read of Kind Turkey's blog.  The band recently released a 7" for 'Greatest Pretender' (buy) on Certified PR Records while they work on their second LP.  It's hard to not let this tune just sweep you up and get totally taken in by its perfectly crafted pop goodness.  They take the ideal recipe for an indie pop song

WHAT DID I DO by Gentleman Jesse

What Did I Do
Frostbite

Gentleman Jesse and His Men blew our power pop minds with the debut LP release in 2007.  Jesse has since dropped 'His Men' from the band title, but hasn't lost his step in delivering some of the best, straightforward blazing rock tunes around.  His new LP, Leaving Atlanta (buy), was released March 13 on Douchemaster Records and cleans up the act a bit without losing too much of that 70's luster.  'What Did I Do' is a clear

GEIST by Dive

Geist by Dive
Shallow by Beach Fossils

Brooklyn dream pop band, and Beach Fossils side project, Dive are currently putting together their debut LP.  'Geist' is expected to be on the LP and will be released as a 7" on April 24 from Captured Tracks (buy).  It's similar to Beach Fossils so you should know what to expect from Dive, but the song delves into a cleaner, psychedelic pop sound.  Frontman Dustin Payseur claims he's working towards 'making something really noisy' for the new Beach Fossils LP he is
