Edita V (previously on CWR)
I've talked about Atlanta's Balkans twice before. The first time was with a bit of ambivalence for their single at the time, 'Georgeanne.' However, the second time was promptly after the release of their following single, 'Edita V,' and with it came a wave of anticipation with the news of an upcoming debut LP. Well, their self-titled debut LP scheduled to be
released on May 10 (pre-order) from Double Phantom Records has gone and obliterated the existence of any skepticism of the band that may have remained. The 10 tracks are packed with some fabulous high-energy, punk-laden rock that is wrapped together so tightly that one can only hope that they sound half as good as this live. The vocals soar in a distinct baritone, passion blares out of the speakers, the drums get beaten to a pulp, and the guitars crunch, strum, blaze, and glitch in an unrelenting fury that make you wonder...is this all really happening this smoothly? There are definitely influences from The Walkmen, The Strokes, and The Smiths (think Handsome Devil and Girl Afraid...not Reel Around the Fountain). There's no word of dates when they're coming to L.A., but they said yesterday that they're working on it. If you listen to the radio stream here regularly then you've heard tracks from about half of the album for the past few months and know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, then you probably should so that you can get a better taste because you can't really find much else from them anywhere on the ineterweb. You should also get this when it comes out...you won't regret it.
