[on repeat] A SECOND SKIN by Girls Names

Ireland's Girls Names have taken the jangle from their early EPs and 2011 debut LP, Dead To Me, and placed it behind a dark, ethereal, 80's post punk haze for their sophomore LP release. The record is called The New Life and was released domestically by Slumberland Records on March 12. Their previous releases held a dark tone in the baritone vocal delivery of singer/songwriter/creative force Cathal Cully but
always played second fiddle to the uplifting, surf inspired 80's jangle. The new record wears the late 70's/early 80's right on its sleeve with moody, textured soundscapes throughout that are driven by graceful bass lines reminiscent of early Echo & The Bunnymen and The Cure. Girls Names have taken all the beauty and gloom from this era and created a sonically atmospheric collection in The New Life. 'A Second Skin' is a fine example of the overall mood of the record and its tempo shifts within songs, while 'Notion' is about as close as Girls Names get to sounding like they did on Dead To Me.
