[on repeat] OPAQUE EYES by Rat Columns

Rat Columns began as a solo project in Perth, Australia, but now it's a promising trio based out of San Francisco that released their debut LP, Sceptre Hole, in July on SmartGuy Records (buy).  The tone of the record takes you on somewhat of a rollercoaster ride that is typified by the album opener 'Eastern Vibration' and its sludgy, twangy discordance.  The LP carries a general overall dark and murky vibe, but
with a very power pop element to it at times that integrates nicely.  Short instrumentals are interspersed between some songs and they traverse over from guitar dream pop, a la Pale Saints, into hazy, drony feedback loaded segments that are reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine or Yo La Tengo.  It's definitely a worthwhile debut that is worthy of note.  These are two of the more notable and uplifting tracks from the LP.  After you appreciate what you've heard, you'd be remiss to not check out the debut 4-track 7" from late last year over at this finest blog
