Ryan Smith is some dude that studied film at Loyola Marymount University and merrily hosted a little radio show broadcasting from LMU every Wednesday from 9am to 12pm on on KXLU 88.9 FM. He's off in Texas now filming a documentary, and he's been kind enough to put together quite the guest mix for CHROMEWAVES RADIO.
He is originally from San Antonio in the swell state of Texas where he grew up on jalapenos, the 13th Floor Elevators, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the tall tales of Davy Crockett. He enjoys margaritas, barbeque, and not having been bitten by rattlesnakes. He's a very friendly chap and you can find him over at Twitter, Facebook, ex.fm, and Last.fm. Be sure to stream, download, and SHARE the mix above to your heart's content. You can also check it out at CHROMEWAVES RADIO's 8tracks page. The playlist and commentary are after the jump.

1. Chestpiece- Summertime
Fadeaway
From the Self-Released “I’m No Drummer” Demo/EP (2011)
Chestpiece is a 5 member
garage punk band out of Harrisonburg, Virginia. This song is probably my favorites
on their 4 track demo they released in January of 2011. I’m personally a fan of
the different directions this song takes within a mere 3 minutes from its
melancholy intro to the grungey drive of its chorus. All with nice surfy and
shoe gazey overtones of course. Hope you like it too!
2. Los Grimm- Viaje En La
Alfombra Magica
From
the Viaje En La Alfombra Magica LP (1967)
On the Electro Harmonix Label
Los Grimm resided in Madrid and evolved into one of the more
intriguing Psych and Freakbeat bands at the time within the region. While not a
cover band, these guys really nailed this Steppenwolf classic in what
personally might be one of my favorite covers ever. If you’re a fan of classic
Spanish garage rock, definitely check out some of their original material.
From the Self-Titled EP on
Shit House Records (2012)
Gainesville, Florida is
churning out great bands on a daily basis. It must be the Gatorade. In any
case, its hard for me to find many faults with this great garage rocking EP
from Thee Holy Ghosts. I especially love the no nonsense simplicity of this track
coupled with a great harmonica solo.
From
the Self-Titled LP on Excello Records (1969)
Lonesome
Sundown is a very talented blues artist who put out a lot of amazing tunes
throughout the late 1950’s, 60’s, and into the 70’s. I took Mojo Man from one
of my favorite albums of his as I am a sucker for the way he dashes his
harmonica into this song. On a more random note, I was supposed to DJ a show in
Dallas for a few friends of mine in a bluesy/rock band called Mojo Stone.
Unfortunately, the incredibly angry, bearded, and wildly tattooed dude working
the door had not been relayed the message from the venue owner. So no DJ’ing.
Surely though, this tune would have been aptly appropriate. If you have the
time, I highly recommend looking into this LP for yourself.
Self-Released Single (2012)
Heard of these dudettes and
this tune for the first time over at a fellow internet blogger’s page called
yvnyl. No release yet, but they have some awesome tunes available for free at
their soundcloud page. They're all awesome, but I also really love a tune they
do called the Tragedy of S.T. Also should mention they're from Berlin, Germany.
Prost!
From the Self-Titled 7” on
Hozac Records (2012)
From the "Yes On Blood" LP on Castle Face Records
(2012)
In the best of ways, the sound
and pacing across Yes On Blood is in a constant state of furiously controlled
evolution via its pyschy feedack, beat driven beats, and punchy headspinning
rhythms. You Got the Critics of course plays into this and is probably best
listened to within the context of the album. Having said that, it’s an awesome
tune in and of itself. In any case, this album will undoubtedly be somewhere in
my top 10 list for 2012.
8. Bass Drum of Death- White
Fright (2012)
“White Fright” will be out as a
tour-only 7” through 3qtr who is also releasing the band’s second LP this fall.
I finally was able to see
this band live for the first time in Austin, Texas at SXSW this year after many
missed opportunities. I knew they would be a great live band, but they rocked
far harder than I ever could have imagined. Very excited to hear the new tunes
they’ve got coming out this fall. By the way, they are launching a massive tour this summer. Be on the
look out because they’re probably playing somewhere near you!
Off their Self-Released and Self-Titled
LP
I first heard of these guys
through an awesome youtube blogger/channel from the Philippines named
TheLazyLazyMe. I liked them a lot happened to play some of their tunes on my
radio show. As it turns out, one of the main guys in the band was a frequent
listener of my show and heard this song the first time I played it on air.
Small world! I got to know him and the band a little more, and they have since
played at a KXLU sponsored show as well as live on the air during one of our
Live@5 shindigs. Be on the lookout for a new 7” in the works!
Self-Released Single (2011)
These psychy/punky/bluesy Los
Angeles rockers have played a few KXLU related gigs in the past, and I believe
have come up to our station for a live at 5 performance. You’ll love the vocals
towards the end of this tune. I gurandamntee it! And they play a dern good set
live I might add. Check them out for yourself!
From a Split Tape With Zyklon
Beach (2010)
On Inch Allah Records (France)
and White Moon Recordings (USA)
I’ve played Catholic Spray on
my KXLU show numerous times. Behind those scrambled lyrics and that wall of
fuzz, surfy riffs and vocals reign supreme. This tune is a little slower for
these French rockers, but has a nice shift in pace towards as it runs its
rampant course towards the finish. I dashed this tune into the mix as I feel its
a little different from the majority of their stuff, but damnit, these guys can
rock freaking balls to the wall hard (point of reference, see also a track
called Captain Wolf).
From the Self-Released “Still
Puking” EP
Just heard these Detroit
dudes for the first time last week and absolutely love their self-proclaimed
sound of “drunk punk surf slime.” They’ve come out with
awesome tunes since the release of this EP that you can find on their bandcamp
page linked below. Its also worth mentioning I
got a sunburn in Dallas the other day. I don’t wanna to get another one, and so
I tossed this song into the mix. Kneeslap.
