[on repeat] BACKWARDS FORWARDS by The Harlequins

The Harlequins are a trio out of Cincinnati that bring an unavoidable force to their psychedelic blend of garage rock.  Their second LP is self-titled and self-released in early March, 2012. The band has a genuine knack for embracing the lo-fi qualities of Guided By Voices while charging forward with the modern energy of Thee Oh Sees. It's a task to nail
them down to any specific sound since they waiver through a blend of punk, garage, psychedelic, and slacker moods, but they're definitely a band to keep an eye on and reports of their live show seem out of this world, which you can hear in the music how this could very easily be true.  It's a dirty, sexy mess that I want to be a part of.  Listen to the energy I'm talking about in 'Backwards Forwards,' and the competent diversity in 'Moonwaves' above.  Both tracks are from the recent self-titled release that you can pick up in CD form straight from the band, or grab the cassette release for a measly $6 courtesy of Random Old Records (buy). You can also stream the whole thing over at their Bandcamp.  The band just recently wrapped up a midwest tour, but keep an eye out for some more dates since these guys tend to play that area quite a bit. No word of any plans to come to L.A. at the moment.
