[on repeat] TUFF GUY by Swiftumz

Tuff Guy

4EVA

Some more goodness from the Bay Area to share, but this time without so much of the angsty, garage sound that seems to be taking over up there.  Swiftumz is Chris McVicker's project and he's floated around the SF rock scene for some time, most notably with his songwriting collaborations with Hunx And His Punx.  His debut LP, Don't Trip, was released
by Holy Mountain in September.  On the release he takes a clear root in the energy and hook qualities of the garage scene in crafting catchy pop tunes, and adds dreamy tones, hip hop beats, and The Jesus & Mary Chain fuzz for a completely separate type of experience.  It's as if he deconstructed the simple power pop tunes we're used to and sprinkled a more diverse set of sounds and influences all over them.  The record's diversity, general introverted sound, and overall attention to craft reminds me a lot of the fantastic Ultra Vivid Scene records of the late 80s/early 90s that went overlooked.  This one has been strangely quiet so far, but it deserves tremendous accolades.  Be sure to grab yourself a copy here
