A few months ago Texas' Fungi Girls previewed a couple of tracks from their new record over the internet, and now they've released their second LP, Some Easy Magic, via Hozac Records. The band consists of only two guys and they were 16 when they released their well-received fuzzy, feedback loaded debut LP, Seafaring Pyramids, two years ago. In listening to Some Easy Magic you can hear the maturity in the cleanliness of the writing and less
of a reliance on feedback, but their sound still contains the hazy surf jangle that was so prevalent and done so well on the first record. The overall mood is the same, but improved...it's still frantic and many of the songs carry seizure-filled grooves that penetrate in a whispery, psychedelic haze. These guys are only 18 years old so I can imagine it's only going to get better...a lot better. It's a shame they canceled their West Coast tour, which should be happening now.
