I had the opportunity to catch the Bay Area's Blasted Canyons this past Saturday at the Pehrspace Gallery and they blew me away. I'll admit I was somewhat indifferent to their debut self-titled LP last year (didn't dislike it, didn't love it), but they bring an overdose of energy to their live show that is simply infectious and can't be ignored. Between each song
there's a frenzied rotation in instruments by the band members and then the onslaught of abrasive synth punk madness continues with the same hyperactive fury. The new songs from their 2nd Place EP on Castle Face Records, which just became available last week in time for the tour, clearly stood out in the setlist. For whatever asinine reason I was too dumb to pick up a copy of the EP at the show. Luckily, thanks to Tiny Grooves I was able to hear the recorded versions of a couple of songs and as expected they sound great, not as slatternly constructed as on the debut, and with some slightly improved production that gives them a cleaner sound without sounding at all polished. I've since gotten a hold of a copy of the EP, and it will definitely be getting loads of listening time. Both songs above are from the EP and 'Holy Geometry' is as close to perfect as you can get. You should get yourself a copy too while you can...the vinyl is quite lovely (see pic below), but for now you can only get one by catching them live (tour dates). Others will be available through Castle Face as of April 20th.
