COMIN' THROUGH by the war on drugs

this band out of philly started as a collaboration between kurt vile and adam granduciel.  i'm not sure how much involvement vile has anymore since going solo.  their debut lp, wagonwheel blues, was released in 2008.  'comin' through' is the single from the upcoming lp, future weather, which comes out 10/26 on secretly canadian (pre-order). it's a nice straightforward, calm, alt-country pop gem (strong emphasis on nice).  'taking the farm' below is from wagonwheel blues.

NEVER COME AROUND by la sera

katy goodman is the bassist for vivian girls and all saints day, but also has this solo project that goes by the name of la sera.  she has also gone the route of fellow bandmates and ditched the lo-fi production of vivian girls for some higher quality sounds on this project.  her first single, 'never come around,' is set for a release on november 16 on hardly art records (pre-order) with a full-length expected in 2011. the new single is available below, as is a track from all saints day.  the full all saints day ep is available for free download at the band's bandcamp.

PEPPERMINT by spectrals

 
spectrals is a one-man outfit (for now) made up of lewis jones out of north england.  his first single '7th date' is out on...you guessed it...slumberland records.  he definitely brings a doo-wop 50's vibe to it.  his first ep,  spectrals extended play, came out on 10/10 from moshi moshi records, includes the track 'peppermint' and is available here.

CANDY by frankie rose and the outs

the ex vivian girl/crystal stilt/dum dum girl, frankie rose, has released her debut lp with her own band 'the outs' on the seemingly ubiquitous slumberland records.  it came out on 9/21 and is available here.  two tracks from the record (and a video) are available below.  the lp continues along the lines reminiscent of girl pop, but swaps the lo-fi production of the vivian girls and dum dum girls for some crystal clear sounds that sound oh so nice.

SHAKE THE SHACKLES by crystal stilts

the stream of crystal stilts' new single 'shake the shackles' surfaced online in mid september.  it sounds so good that it makes me think they aren't missing the departure of frankie rose.  the actual release date for the single is 10/26 on slumberland records.  the follow-up to their great debut lp, alight of night, is expected early 2011.  i've also included a 2009 single for your downloading and listening enjoyment below.

MATADOR TURNS 21

one of the most revered record labels turns 21 and is celebrating in las vegas this weekend (where else would you celebrate your 21st?).  the matador at twenty-one festival is from 10/1 - 10/3 and features an amazing lineup of artists that have called matador home (as you can see from the poster above).

this mississippi band was featured on here previously to highlight their great new single, 'turns to blood.'  well, we are here with them again to announce the release of their debut ep, the lead riders, which came out yesterday (9/28) on zoo music and continues in the same dirty, spooky, grimy, fuzzy sound.  only 500 copies were pressed and they are available here, or you can grab it digitally on amazon.  you can also stream the ep in its entirety here.  (tip: it gets even better the louder you listen to it).

MEET THE FROWNIES by twin sister

 twin sister, out of long island, ny, self-released their ep, vampires dreaming with kids, and their follow-up, color your life, for free via the band's website in early 2010.  they aren't available for free anymore, but you can pick up copies of these at their bandcamp. they just recently recorded for the first time in a proper studio and 'meet the frownies' is the result.  'all around and away we go' is off color your life...my neighbor calls it beach disco.  they will be playing at the music box on 10/14 w/ cults and the morning benders (tickets).

I'M DEAD by the liminanas

unmistakably french, the liminanas blend stereolab, serge gainsbourg, and the velvet underground into their 2010 version of a garage/warehouse lounge sound.  they had 2 singles out in april of this year that are available on trouble in mind records and hozac records.  their self-titled debut lp is expected in october on the trouble in mind label. i can't pick which of the two tracks below i like better.

the name of this side project from sam mehran says it all.  formerly of the test icicles, he had disappeard in '06, but now has projects going as matrix metals, yoga, explorers, wingdings, foxy baby, outer limits recordings and the sweethearts.  enjoy your weekend.

lots of love swirling around the interweb for this dominican born fellow who grew up on an island in florida (something about being the winter home base of ringling bros circus), but you can decide for yourself by listening to his smooth tracks below.  twin shadow is george lewis jr. and the 'on repeat' lp, forget, was produced by grizzly bear's chris taylor and released on his terrible records label. it comes out on 9/28 and is available for pre-order here and can be streamed in its entirety here.  he'll be at the echoplex on 9/30 opening for jamie lidell (tickets).
