END TIMES by weekend
weekend is one of slumberland records' latest signings. they're from san francisco and their upcoming lp, sports, will be released on 11/4. this track, end times, released as a 7″ split single with young prisms in june, and is very bassy, noisy, and dreamy all at the same time.

GOLDEN HAZE by wild nothing
this is a new tune from wild nothing taken off of an upcoming ep of the same name. it should be out later this year on captured tracks. the band consists of one guy (jack tatum), but he's recruited others for live shows. you can catch them for $10 at the echo on 9/12 (tickets). if you aren't familiar with him, you should check out his well-received release from earlier this year, gemini, which includes the catchy tune 'chinatown.' i just recently found out that one of the more admirable qualities of chinatown was taken from a song by the adorable french singer/actress from the 60's, chantal goya (pictured above). great sound...i'll need to look for more from her. enjoy all the tracks below.

RUN by velvet davenport (ft. ariel pink)
this minneapolis boy was featured on a compilation from moon glyph records, regolith, that hosts another track previously posted on this site. he has a new lp, white blue, which has 7 songs and still barely passes the 10-minute mark. it is available on cassette here. this is a song that features ariel pink, but it is not included on the cassette release. it was released earlier this year as as part of a double-sided single.

LEAVE YOU FOREVER by cloud nothings / OUT OF TUNE by real estate
and now back to our regularly scheduled programming...
...true panther records is home to releases from girls, glasser, magic kids, delorean, ty segall, morning benders, and now they've added new 7" releases from two other great current bands, cloud nothings and real estate. real estate's is available october 12th, and cloud nothing's is available october 26, but the pre-order is up now. Each are $5 and the cloud nothings record contains 4 tracks (that's a great deal). my apologies that these aren't available for download like my other posts, but you can pick them up here.
much more polished, catchy stuff from cloud nothings...

JOHNNY HIT AND RUN PAULENE by x (caliornia)
easily one of the best bands to ever come out of LA, if not all of california. x formed in 1977 and released 7 albums from 1980 to 1983. they re-formed in 2000 and still tour occasionally. they are supposedly writing new stuff, but there are no specifics on any release information. this song is off their 1980 debut album, los angeles. since i'm just about home, it's obviously fitting to include another track off this record as well.

MAGIC TOY MISSING by the meat puppets (arizona)
punk, country, and psychedlic rockers meat puppets are from phoenix, arizona and were on sst records. their 1994 album, too high to die, was their most popular probably due to the fact that they had just appeared on mtv unplugged with nirvana in 1993. these tracks are off their second record, meat puppets II, which was released in 1984.

KNOW YOUR ONION! by the shins (new mexico)
the shins hail from albuquerque, new mexico, and began in 1997 as a side project for james mercer, whose primary band was Flake Music. after about a year recording with the shins, flake music came to an end. ultimately, the movie garden state gave the shins huge popularity with the hit 'new slang,' but i won't bore you with hearing that tune again so here's another one off that first record.

MIRRORED AND REVERSED by white denim (texas)
the stars at night,
are big and bright (clap,clap,clap,clap)...
there are lots of great bands out of texas, and this austin-based three-piece is no exception. this tune is off their 2009 lp, fits. the second track is from their US debut, exposion, which was self-released in 2008. they'll be playing at spaceland on 11/2 if you're interested in tickets.

HOLLAND, 1945 by neutral milk hotel (louisiana)
into the state of the 'big easy.' just as new orleans holds a place in the world as a classic city, this ruston, louisiana band also holds a place as recording one of the great classic albums of all time, in the aeroplane over the sea. the record was released in 1998 and is supposedly based on holocaust victim anne frank.

A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION by elvis presley (mississippi)
the king was born in tupelo, mississippi with a twin brother who was stillborn (there's some trivia for you). his family moved to memphis when he was 13 and the rest is...well, you know the story. again, this isn't proving to be too easy. you should all be thankful that i didn't do a post on 3 doors down for someone from good ol' mississippi. on a side note, i always thought that there was a striking resemblance between the king and simon le bon.

LIFE IN RAIN by remy zero (alabama)
into alabama and this is already a little more difficult than i expected. luckily, remy zero, who is typically associated as being an LA band, is actually from birmingham, alabama (fact check). they haven't recorded anything since 2001's golden hum, but coincidentally they are playing some shows in october in memory of their drummer who recently passed away with the promise of new material. they'll be at spaceland on oct 12 (tickets). this track is off their second album, villa elaine, when they had opened up for radiohead and were supposed to be the next big thing.

BLOW OUT YOUR LIGHTS by jacuzzi boys (florida)
i'm driving across the country this week (florida to california) and decided to make the trip a little more interesting by posting about an artist from each state as i enter across its border.
lets start by leaving florida with the high energy jacuzzi boys from miami. they've released at least five 7″ singles, and they have one full-length lp, no seasons, which was released in 2009 and opens with this track. their most recent single can be heard here.

WASTED HOURS by arcade fire
as i'm sure you've already heard, arcade fire released an album, the suburbs, a few weeks ago and it's pretty damn good. they will be playing the shrine auditorium on oct 7 and 8 and there have been a series of ticket pre-sales the past couple of days on ticketmaster. for those of you who didn't take advantage, the general on-sale is today at 10 a.m. the shrine only holds 6,000 so they're sure to go fast. good luck! oh...and they just so happened to release a new video for the song 'ready to start' which you can see after the jump (click 'read more' below) along with a couple of audio links to my favorites off the album.

[on repeat] WHO FEELS RIGHT by white fence
woodsist record label continues to impress. white fence consists of one man, but with a hefty resume. tim presley is the singer in garage-soul band Darker My Love, player on The Fall album Reformation Post TLC, and is also now a full-time member of The Strange Boys. he calls LA home and released this self-titled lp this past april. it's filled with psychedelic, syd barret sounding gems with plenty of other 60's influences sprinkled throughout.

[on repeat] SCULPTURE GARDENS by the art museums
the san francisco duo, the art museums, released their debut lp, rough frame, in february of this year on the popular woodsist record label and it's been pretty much 'on repeat' since then. it's poppy, fuzzy, lo-fi, and sounds like it could have used some more production, but don't let that stop you from listening. the band claims poverty forced them into primitive equipment, but it still takes a certain quality to sound this rudimentary and great at the same time. it makes you wonder what some polishing could have done to them.

GLITTER by no age
here's a peek from the forthcoming lp, everything in between, by no age coming out on 9/28 on subpop!. the cover art is above. i haven't been a fan of much of this LA duo's past stuff, but their sound is definitely growing. the single is currently available on 7".

EASTOVER WIVES by dent may
eastover wives is the b-side on the upcoming forest family records release from mississippi’s dent may. he has very much of the retro/lounge thing going on and carried over a similar sound from his dent may & his magnificent ukelele release in 2009. the single is out on 9/14 and is available for pre-order now. you can download the a-side over at the label’s website, but i’ve included it here as well.

[on repeat] ONE LAST by avi buffalo
these local boys and girl from long beach are opening up for my morning jacket tonight at the greek theater. their self-titled debut was released in april on sub pop! it's made up of fun jangly pop and has been a regular part of my listening for the past few months...so if you're going to the show tonight they're worth checking out. some have even said the vocalist sounds like wayne coyne.

TOUCH ME I'M GOING TO SCREAM, PART 2 by my morning jacket
tomorrow night one of the best live acts in the decade / universe (actually, there's only one other band i'd rather see more) is playing the greek theater with the 'on repeat' avi buffalo. no new music has been released since their last lp, evil urges, in 2008, but they should be playing some new songs at tomorrow's show. i'm puzzled as to why there are still GOOD seats available. i guess that's what happens when you don't have a current release out.

MARY NEVER SINGS OUR SONGS by soft powers
i just came across this last night from one of the 'alt zones' sites transparent. this is gorgeous and it's not what i'd expect to come out of atlanta. i hope you're overlooking an ocean while listening to this, and don't give up on it...it climaxes into a slowdive-like experience.

NIGHT & DAY by chief
this 4-piece is from santa monica and is releasing their debut, modern rituals, on aug. 16 via domino. pretty straightforward stuff. every time i hear the intro to this song i think it's going to be radiohead, but that promptly fades. it fades even further when i hear their other stuff. hey, i'm just being honest.

CHEMICALS by fez
first off, very high candidate for worst band name ever, but this UK four-piece seems to effortlessly crank out catchy pop gems. don't look for any profound lyrical meaning here, it's pretty straightforward stuff so just turn off your mind and bounce around. if your are inclined, you can pick up their EP, hot light, out this september. if you're more compulsive you can grab it right now digitally at their bandcamp.

a little later than promised, but better late than never...here is 23 year old ty segall. he's from SF and recently released melted on june 8. it's his third lp in 2 years...that's a lot of writing. ty describes it at sounding like 'cherry cola, sno-cones and taffy.' i'm not a fan of any of those, but i sure am a fan of ty. get a dose of reverb, fuzz, and rock below.
